These hollies were planted in a parking island in RTP. Leftover soil was pushed into the area and used for planting. It was layered, compacted, acidic, low fertility sub-soil.
Normally, this type of dirt would not see the light of day for another 10,000 years. Now, it is being used to grow plants. There are few nutrients and they are largely unavailable to the plants.
